Well pumps · SP vs SQ family

Grundfos SP series vs SQ / SQE

Grundfos SP is the classic stainless submersible line (commonly 4" and larger diameters in residential/light commercial use). SQ / SQE are the compact 3" electronically controlled domestic family. They overlap on “get groundwater to the house,” but they are not interchangeable kits.

Well pumps · SP overview · residential

Bottom line Use SP when you need conventional 4"+ hydraulics, higher flow/head options, sand-tolerant stainless construction, and a local tech who lives in switch/tank (or external VFD) culture. Use SQ / SQE when the well is narrow, you want built-in soft start / dry-run / voltage window, or you want integrated constant pressure via CU.

SP in plain language

Side-by-side (homeowner view)

TopicSQ / SQESP (typical residential)
Diameter ~3" pump — fits many 3" and restricted 4" casings Often 4"+ clear casing required
Motor / start PM motor + built-in electronics; soft start Conventional submersible motor culture; soft start / VFD optional externally
Constant pressure SQE + CU 301/302-class packages Usually external frequency drive + design
When it fits Domestic supply, narrow wells, generator-friendly starts Higher flow/head, standard 4" replacements, sandier water with proper selection

When a conventional SP still wins

  1. Existing 4" well with a known SP (or similar) that a local crew can pull and match quickly.
  2. Peak irrigation or multi-bath demand that sits better on an SP curve than the SQ family’s domestic range.
  3. Owner preference for switch/tank simplicity and widely stocked parts — if constant pressure is not a priority.

When SQ / SQE usually wins the conversation

  1. Casing too tight for a 4" pump.
  2. Desire for soft start and integrated dry-run protection without a pile of add-ons.
  3. Want CU-based constant pressure without designing a separate VFD package.

Either way, size by GPM and total dynamic head first. Then read SQ vs SQE if you stay in the 3" family.
